A young man in a red skeleton mask had his two-day bank robbing spree ended by a group of Hasidic vigilantes.
The NY Post reports that the robber, later identified by police as 20-year-old Kevin Crawford, allegedly burst into a Brooklyn bank branch on Wednesday, Oct. 17th and pulled a gun on the teller, shouting “Happy f***ing Halloween!” The masked gunman demanded $4,000 in cash but made off with double that amount.
Crawford was followed out the door by a group of citizens calling 9-1-1 and soon detained by Borough Park Shomrim volunteers while the police made their way to the scene. The Shomrim patrol Hasidic and Haredi neighborhoods, unarmed, in an attempt to help stop crimes such as this one.
Crawford had already stolen $1,960 from the Dime Savings Bank in Williamsburg the day before. He also tried robbing the Emigrant Savings Bank on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene the morning of the Brooklyn branch robbing but left empty handed. He has subsequently been charged with robbery and attempted robbery.
It’s unknown if the guise was a deliberate homage to the anti-Semitic character Red Skull from Captain America, but the fact that he was foiled by a group of Jewish do-gooders makes this real life win feel like it came straight out of the pages of a comic book.
