In news that surprised no one, Marvel announced this week that Steve Rogers is making a comeback as Captain America in the new title Captain America: Steve Rogers. Rogers has been sidelined since 2014, when his longtime friend and ally, Sam Wilson took over the mantle of the star-spangled man with a plan in All-New Captain America. This move was further cemented in Captain America: Sam Wilson, when Steve Rogers reaffirmed his support for Wilson as his replacement.
The decision to bring back Rogers as Captain America is quite logical considering Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is set to light up the big screen once again in Captain America: Civil War on May 6th. It also adds to the celebration of Captain America’s 75th year anniversary to see the original captain returning to take on Hydra and other foes once again.
When asked what this move meant for Sam Wilson’s future as the shielded protector, Nick Spencer, current writer of Captain America: Sam Wilson and the writer for the up-coming return of Steve Rogers in Captain America: Steve Rogers said in an interview with marvel.com “It means we’ll have two Captain Americas. When Steve handed the shield to Sam, it didn’t come with any caveats. It’s his. Steve respects and admires what his old partner is doing, and wants him to carry on.”
This clearly means that Marvel for the foreseeable future will have two Captain Americas, however don’t worry about them getting in each others way. Spencer added that “There are enough problems out there, and enough bad guys, to keep both of them busy. They’ll have very different missions; Sam will continue fighting the battles no one else will go near, while Steve is faced with a resurgent threat from his past.”
The series will be drawn by Jesus Saiz as well as written by current Captain America: Sam Wilson scribe, Nick Spencer. An exact date for Rogers’ return has not been announced, but it has been confirmed it will be sometime this year.
