Planet Comicon 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri has wrapped and we have all started to go back to our daily lives. Thousands trekked to Kansas City to enjoy the event. Planet Comicon has been around for many years, so I knew that the place would be packed full of people that share a passion for the community.
I had the pleasure of taking one of my best friends from, Faye Kelts, to her first big convention. The original plan was to only take her to one day. I knew the amount of people could be overwhelming. Once we navigated our way through the lines of people to pick up my press pass we decided to stop and eat. There were a few different food trucks inside the building that you could enjoy. We opted for a truck that offered fries with a variety of toppings and another that had lemonade.
We documented our adventure as she accompanied me, taking in the electric atmosphere. One of the cosplayers we met was dressed as Honey Lemon from Big Hero 6. It turns out that she does kids parties and used the con to pass out business cards. We saw many Deadpools, Harley Quinns, Captain Americas and Buckys. At the end of the day Faye decided she wanted to attend the next day.
Over the course of the weekend, Faye had the chance to meet writer Jai Nitz (Dream Thief, El Diablo). She commissioned Katie Cook (My Little Pony) for a custom mini painting. Stood by as I met Amanda Conner (Harley Quinn), which was the highlight of my entire weekend. Took pictures and notes during the panel Secrets of Comic Book Writing which featured Cullen Bunn (Drax), Matt Hawkins (Think Tank), Jason Latour (Spider-Gwen), and Dennis Hopeless (X-Men). One of the biggest events of our weekend was attending Stan Lee’s panel. Stan Lee is kind of a big deal.
It’s always great seeing a convention through someone else’s eyes. We take advantage of it sometimes and forget how magical of a place it can be for newcomers or children.
Faye’s Thoughts on Planet Comicon:
If you got to attend, you might have come to Planet Comicon looking for something. A hard-to-find comic, to spot a fun cosplay, an encounter with a celebrity you admire, an artist commission, or a writer’s autograph. I can’t say I was looking for any of that, but I did find a plush pokemon, a Legend of Zelda t-shirt, and a mini watercolor commission (Pinkie Pie, as a kitten, if you’re curious). I had so much fun; there was never a dull moment.
It would be an understatement to say I had a lot of fun at Planet Comicon. From the cosplay (Pinkie Pie Stormtrooper, anyone?) to the panels (you should have seen Stan Lee), Planet Comicon was non-stop excitement and entertainment.
Planet Comicon was my first real convention. I went in without too many expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised by, well by everything. From what I could tell it seemed very well organized and well attended, pretty much everyone I encountered was having a great time. I had so much fun, I’m now considering attending more conventions in Kansas City, despite the fact that I live in the state of New York.
