As the short-lived era of Sam Wilson serving as the primary Captain America, it appears that Steve Rogers is back in.
Today Marvel Comics announced Captain America: Steve Rogers, a new series from writer Nick Spencer and artist Jesus Saiz, which will star Steve Rogers as he returns to his iconic role as Captain America.
This should come as no great surprise, what with Captain America: Civil War about to receive it’s worldwide release next week and that Marvel has demonstrated a long history of returning its major characters to status quo just in time for their cinematic releases. It was right before the release of Amazing Spider-Man 2 that the long-running and critically acclaimed Superior Spider-Man came to a close.
The new Steve Rogers-centric series also seemed poised to capitalize on elements which have featured heavily in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, specifically that of Hydra, which will be led by longtime Captain America foe the Red Skull in Captain America: Steve Rogers.
Whether this approach can draw in and retain new readers to what has been a poorly selling franchise for some time remains to be seen. Marvel has had mixed results when attempting to align it’s publishing lineup with that in theaters, so they are obviously hoping that this new series bucks that trend and sees Captain America become a flagship title once again.
